Q1. What is 'Vedic' or 'Ancient Indian Mathematics'?

Ans: 'Vedic Mathematics' basically consists of Mathematical concepts, methods and techniques embodied in the Vedic & Upanishadic literature. These are expressed in terms of Mantras and Sutras (Aphorisms), in subtle forms.

Ancient Indian Mathematics refers to post Vedic & medieval times up to the 19th century. Some of the greatest names are Aryabhata, Brahmagupta, Bhaskaracharya (I & II), Sridharacharya, Madhavacharya, Mahaveeracharya, Narayana Pandita etc., The mathematical concepts, methods, postulates, theorems and techniques are expressed in terms of Slokas; which are Lyrically beautiful, but mathematically precise! And also in terms of Sutras & coded literature.

Q2 What is the scope of VM/AIM?

History : An ancient system of mathematics, Vedic Math is based on simple rules and principles through which any mathematical problem - be it Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry or Trigonometry can be solved orally ! Vedic math is a set of sixteen Sanskrit mathematical formulae or sutras and their corollaries derived from the Vedas, which were formulated over centuries. The Sutras were lost over time but thankfully, re- discovered by Jagadguru Swami Sri Bharati Krsna Tirthaji Maharaja between 1911 and 1918.

MATHEMATICS SUTRAS :

Natural Formulae: - The system is based on 16 Vedic sutras or aphorisms which are actually word - formulae that describe natural ways of solving a range of mathematical problems.

Some examples of sutras are "By one more than the one before ", " All from 9 and the last from 10", and "Vertically and Crosswise". These 16 one-line formulae originally written in Sanskrit are easy to remember . These formulae enable you to solve long mathematical problems quickly.

A simple system :- According to common opinion, this method is far more systematic, coherent and unified than the conventional system normally followed in schools. Vedic math is mental tool for calculation that encourages the development and use of intuition and innovation, while giving the student a lot of flexibility fun & satisfaction.

Example 1 :
Finding Square of a number ending with 5

To find the square of 75

Do the following

Multiply 5 by 5 and put 25 as your right part of answer.
Multiply 7 with the next higher digit ie (7+1)=8 gives
56 as the left part of the answer, Answer is 5625

Example 2

Calculate 43 X 47

The answer is 2021 Same theory worked here too.

The above 'rule' works when you multiply 2 numbers with units digits add up
to 10 and tenth place same

Example 3 : 52 X 58 = 3016 How long this take ?

Example 4: Multiply 52 X 11

Answer is 572

Write down the number being multiplied and put the total of the digits between 2 digits

52 X 11 is [ 5 and 5+2=7 and 2 ] , answer is 572

Example 5: Can you find the following within less than a minute?

a) 1001/13 ?

b) 1/19 ?
